Visual Arts

Zion's study of visual arts inspires students to harness their creativity in new and exciting ways. Through the use of many different mediums, students are encouraged to let their creative mind take over and create beautiful pieces of art!

Kindergarten
 Visual Art
In Kindergarten the students will explore and create with a wide variety of media, such as painting, drawing, 3 dimensional forms, shapes, printing and collage.  The focus in Kindergarten is to allow the students to create using imagination while introducing a wide spectrum of materials and styles. They will be exposed to exemplars in art and learn some basic elements of art such as color, shape and line.

In 1st and 2nd grade the students will explore and create with a wide variety of media, such as painting, drawing, 3 dimensional forms and shapes, printing and collage.  The focus in 1st and 2nd grade  is to allow the students to create using imagination while also focusing on the basic elements of art such as color, shape and line texture and value. Student will also learn a bit about artists in history and their contributions to art.

3rd and 4th  Grade Visual Art
In   3rd and 4th  grade the students will use and create with a wide variety of media, such as painting, drawing with different media, 3 dimensional forms and shapes, printing and collage.  The focus in  3rd and 4th  grade  is to allow the students to continue to create using imagination while also building upon the skills learned in 1st and 2nd grade. We will continue to emphasize  the basic elements of art such as color, repetition, shape, line, texture and value as well as learn some techniques to describe perspective    using value and line. Students will also discover more about famous artists and art history.

5th and 6th Grade Visual Art
In 5th and 6th  grade the students will use and create with a wide variety of media, such as painting with water colors and acrylics, drawing with line and adding shading and value, forms and shapes, pattern and repetition to create original designs, creating op art, introducing graphics and technology in the creation of art.  The focus in  5th and 6th  grade  is to allow the students to continue to create using imagination while also building upon the skills learned in 3rd and 4th grade. We will still emphasize  the basic elements of art such as color, repetition, shape, line, texture and value  in creating compositions, as well as use new techniques.

7th and 8th Grade Visual Art

In Middle school the students will learn about art and its place in society, what art is and what it is not. We discuss how art is used in the world today  and in the past. There is an art history component where students research and create a multi-media presentation for the class. They use and create with a wide variety of media, drawing with  charcoal, graphite, ink, chalk and pastels. We will learn about how artists use form and shapes, pattern and repetition to create images and meaning, printmaking with traditional carving and gel prints. We create sculptures looking at balance and form. We use computer drawing programs to create self portraits and introduce basic photographic elements of composition. The focus in middle school is to allow the students to continue to create using imagination while also building upon the skills learned in the lower grades.
