Music
Through Zion's music program, students are introduced to a wide variety of musical concepts. Through the introduction of different instruments, choir, as well as music theory and history, students are able to broaden their knowledge of music, paving the way for a lifetime of music.
Zion also offers an opportunity to participate in community band through their affiliate high school Mayer Lutheran High School. Through weekly practice opportunities as well as periodic concerts, students are exposed to the thrill of performing.
- Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students are given an introduction to music. Lessons are a variety of songs, activities, dance, movement, and playing rhythm instruments. Age-appropriate music concepts are taught as well as exposure to a variety of music including sacred, classical, folk music, and children's songs.
- 3rd through 6th Grade students go through a variety of units in music. They include: instruments of the Orchestra, The Great Composers, History of Rock and Roll, Great Artists of Jazz and Blues, and World Music. Students are also given the opportunity to learn to play two instruments, the ukulele and the recorder.
- All seventh and eighth graders are involved in the school choir. They are also given optional choices of participating in music. They may choose to continue lessons on the instruments ukulele or recorder. These are done during recess times or before school. They may also choose to be in tone chimes. They learn to play both sacred and secular songs on "bell-like" instruments. This group also plays in church services four times a year.
