A Brief History

Zion Lutheran School in Cologne, Minnesota, started  September 6, 1857, in the pastor's home and was officially founded in 1873. In 1861, a new church was built, which served as both the Lutheran church and school until 1880. That year, a new frame church replaced the original structure, and seven years later, the school moved into a new two-room building. Despite challenges like the early 1950s fire that destroyed both the church and school, the congregation quickly rebuilt, continuing to foster education and faith.

During the mid-1940s, a Tri-School Playday was introduced, bringing together Zion, Emanuel Lutheran-Hamburg, and St. John's-Young America schools. Despite being the smallest group, Zion consistently earned recognition, with its trophy case boasting numerous awards for athletic achievement. The events, largely unchanged since their inception, feature a variety of races, jumps, dodgeball, and softball skill contests. Zion’s victories have often been nail-biters, leaving spectators as exhausted as the participants. The Tri-School Playday,  remains a staple event for students and families at all three schools.
